........also responsible for actually producing the finished product like a film director does with a film.

Re: Bowie dead
A good producer has their own style and will enhance the music and pull it all together. They are responsible for the sound quality and feel of the music.
Makes a massive difference to an album if it"s well produced or not.
Quincey Jones's Thriller is a great example.

That Tony Visconti video where he strips back "Heroes" original backin and explains how the track was built up is brilliant. IMO.

More trivia madness - he wasn't actually playing the piano when the scene was shot, someone else was in the background and he was just 'miming' for filming/acoustic reasons, though he was singing live and he did compose the music (the lyrics were written by Gervais and Merchant).

In the 1984 short film 'Jazzin' for blue Jean' Bowie turns in a very Gervais like performance (it's almost as if Gervais watched it then based his entire self referential on it). Anyway it's on YouTube and worth a watch.

What does a producer of an album actually do?

In my experience they take your work and turn it into their product

I think you will find that after recording Black Star Bowie visited his son's wife to ensure his Gene Genies lived on

Meticulous death {and life} planning

Yeah, that must be the same one.

charlie

I'm in Oslo, but I can fix the IP address to watch iPlayer. Thanks for the tip. I'm watching lots of stuff with the kids, for their spiritual development, so all tips are welcome.

In my Bowie youtube surfing of late, I realised that his last ever interview was the spoof interview you can find on the extras bit of Ricky Gervais' "Extras," where he's speaking of his lesser known comedy genius that he kindly used to help Gervais further his career. That he keeps a straight face is testament to how good an actor he was.

The scene in Extras where he plays the piano in the nightclub was apparently teh last time he played piano (music?) in front of any kind of audience....that being the cast and extras of "Extras."

Trivia MADNESS!

He did indeed Iron. I liked the bit too about setting up the three different mics, plus the synth from Eno's briefcase. Great stuff.

Re: Bowie dead
Ah yes Lily, I saw that one. Fripp really made me laugh in that interview, something along the lines of 'people who play the beginning of Beauty and the Beast... you know they'll get erections'!!

If you're interested, the Music Moguls doc is now on youtube (on't think you can get iPlayer where you are?):

The Visconti stuff is around the 20 minute mark.

Did they really translate the documentary Five Years (after the opener to zsatsfm) Five IMPORTANT years?

Anyway, excellent film that.

I didn't see that one, but there was one called "5 Important Years" in norwegian, which looked over 5 different ch-ch-ch changes during his career. In that they had the producer demonstrating the same thing about the layers of Fripp's guitar tracks on "Heroes." Fripp himself was well happy with his quirky guitar riffs on "Fashion."

Re: Bowie dead
That was very good charlie. Visconti worked wonders on that song to turn it into the classic that it became.

Did you see the BBC4 documentary Music Moguls at the weekend? Had a great section with Tony Visconti stripping the track right down, including the Fripp guitars.

I love his guitars on the Scary Monsters album too.

Conversely you've just proven your ultra cool credentials.

Lily Hammer 2:59 Tue Jan 26
Re: Bowie dead
Fripp is the wailing electric guitars that go on all the time. About 3 or 4 takes all included on top of each other. Not often that can work, but it sure as fuck does on Heroes.

Far Cough 2:57 Tue Jan 26
Re: Bowie dead
I can't get enough of Heroes the song, you can absolutely hear the Brian Eno influence on it, didn't Robert Fripp contribute as well?
